The Malaysia Steel and Metal Distributors Association (MSMDA), was established in 1943, garnered over 80 years of history. We were started by the community of Fujian Anxi people in Selangor to cultivate friendship and foster fellowship amongst the members to ultimately unite the Chinese hardware merchants and provide mutual support. With continual growth and progress, we have successfully earned status as a national steel and metal trade association.

As a steel organization representative in Malaysia, our early activities are focused on the acquisition of copper and iron scrap. Growing through collective strength and negotiations with the government, we actively advocated for the rights and benefits of association members to achieve our desired goals. Since the country gained independence in 1957, the association has taken on the responsibility of cementing the unity of the industry players, assisting members in adapting to market changes, and expanding the scope of its services and disseminating trade information for its members to keep abreast of competition. We also actively participate and involved in social welfare activities, particularly in supporting and contributing to the enhancement of Chinese education.

In the 80s, we began to explore the possibilities to tap into the international market, thus leading our members to expand their networks and relationships overseas. In the 1990s, we continued to grow in strength and collaborated with other industry associations to seek greater benefits for the industry amidst a very challenging business environment. Finally in 2001, our outstanding achievements received due recognition nationwide and we were nominated and was duly awarded as the Top 10 Most Active and Best Society in the country.

Under the excellent leadership of the past and present presidents,we have adapted with the times and successfully transformed from a regional entity into a national organization. Currently, our 400 members are mainly steel importers, exporters, stockists, and traders. Businesses include metal materials trading such as steel, stainless steel, building materials, copper & iron scrap, and copper aluminium. The primary function of our council is to coordinate between our members and negotiate with various government departments, representing the industry and championing for the cause of our members.

We also actively organize diverse and beneficial community activities, including holding friendly golf competitions, festive celebrations, charity events, karaoke competitions, industry seminars, and awarding members’ children who excels in their studies, to encouraging the participation and involvement of the younger generation to perpetuate the sustainability of the Association.

Together in unison we will continue to strive towards exploring new business opportunities for the mutual benefit of all our members. The Malaysia Steel and Metal Distributors Association is committed to promoting the development of the steel industry and becoming a pioneer in fostering the prosperity of steel and metal industries in domestic and international, creating a brilliant future for the steel and metal trade!
